Happy Monday everyone! What a read to start the week than with a little soap boxing from your favorite Joe. I can’t put a finger on where I first heard the idea of “fall in love with the process of being great”, but it sure has stuck. Like most sayings I enjoy this one is simple, to the point, and the MOST true.
If you spend any amount of time around me you know that I like to say “I can’t wait till i’m rich and famous”. I do this for a few reasons.
- It’s a semi joke of holding onto my dreams of staring and hosting SNL one day.
- I am striving to become very successful, and I always have the thought in the back of my mind.
A problem that I have, and i’m sure many others out there can share the same feelings, I just wanna be rich and famous right now! The daily grind and working your way up is the hard part, but i’ve recently come to the realization that this is the best part. It’s where we come from, and the blood sweat and tears that make the rich and famous that much sweeter.
Success is a Marathon, Not a Sprint
You can try and argue a case for people like Zuckerburgh and the SnapChat bros, we are all marathon runners in the end. Success does not happen over night. Thousands of hours are put into perfecting your medium, but most of us only see the end result, and believe it happened over night. We probably haven’t seen Zuck coding till 4 in the morning, eating pizza rolls in his dinky Palo Alto home, when he was building Facebook. We probably haven’t heard about the hundreds of shows Mackelemore and Ryan Lewis performed before they hit it big. Success is a marathon, not a sprint.
Then, one day you wake up and you’ve done it! You hit it big, you’re rich and famous! But, it doesn’t stop there. When you’ve finally made it to the top, you have to work even harder to stay there. Making it is just half the battle, the other half is staying there. Damn, i’m sounding so deep. The point is, whether you like it or not, you’re a marathon runner.
We’re Talking About Practice
Maybe Allen Iverson can get away with these kinda things, but we cannot! You’ve gotta fall in love with practice, and the process of becoming great. If you can become the one who loves practice, you’re way ahead of the game. No one likes to practice, because everyone just wants to be rich and famous right away! The ones who are the first in the gym and last to leave, because they love it, are ahead of the game and will stay ahead of the game.
If you can understand that everything you are doing today, even if it’s just practice, will get you to where you want to be, it makes it that much easier. So, fall in love with the process, and know that you will become rich and famous soon enough!
